Waterville Transatlantic Cable Station Walk
Saturday 22 August 2026, 4pm to 5pm, as listed for National Heritage Week. Meets at Tech Amergin in Spunkane.
Runs every year
Waterville was one end of the transatlantic telegraph cable, and for the best part of a century the village was a communications hub that carried messages between Europe and America. The cable station buildings are still there.
This Heritage Week walk goes around the station with local guides, Dorothy and Amy, sharing stories and first-hand accounts of the years when the village worked the cable. It starts at Tech Amergin in Spunkane at 4pm and runs about an hour.
If the cable story catches you, there is a companion talk the same afternoon: Fathoms Deep, on the ships and the people behind Waterville's cable heritage, at 3pm. Both are free and both suit families.
